Drainage upgrade keeps flood worries at bay

Flash floods like this used to take place at Jalan SS2/6 in Petaling Jaya before MBPJ upgraded the drainage system.

FOR the past three years, several double-storey terrace houses in SS2, Petaling Jaya were affected by flash floods due to overflow from upstream drainage.

Eric Foong who has been living in the neighbourhood for 40 years said his area often faced flash floods after heavy rains.

During downpours, he would frantically barricade his porch with plastic boards and redirect the water towards the drain to prevent it from entering the house.

“Several times, my porch, garden and hall would get flooded,” said Foong, who lives in Jalan SS2/6.

Flood woes, however, are a thing of the past now that Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has upgraded the drainage system at a cost of RM100,000.

The flood mitigation project has so far been successful in stopping flash floods.

“After the upgrading works, we have not had any flash flood,” said Foong.

Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei, MBPJ councillor Billy Wong and several residents visited the upgraded drainage site yesterday.

Lim said, “Late March and April last year, MBPJ embarked on the drainage upgrade project and in July last year, the upgrading was completed.

“MBPJ had also monitored the rain flow situation here and there has not been any flooding since the project was done.

“The flood water could rise up to one metre high in the past.”

Wong said the flash floods could have been due to an increase in business activities in the upstream area and less frequent drainage clearing.

He added that it was important for drains to be rubbish-free for water to flow smoothly.
