WHITE liquid believed to be palm oil waste has been identified as the cause of poor water quality in Sungai Serdang in Kapar, Klang.
Selangor Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Orang Asli Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the waste was discharged illegally.
"Investigation by the Selangor Water Management Board (Luas) found that an unidentified person driving a truck was the culprit.
"Samples from the affected area have been taken and sent to the Chemistry Department for further analysis," he said in a statement Thursday (April 13).
In a related matter, Hee said Luas also found charcoal waste inside Sungai Serdang, which caused the water quality to drop further.
"The waste was released from a power generation facility by accident in a nearby village, before flowing into the river.
"Checks by Luas found that improvement and cleaning works were ongoing by the station operator and no more waste is being discharged," he added.
Hee said the checks were conducted following a complaint by a member of the public on Wednesday (April 12) about the deteriorating water quality of Sungai Serdang.
He said Luas was working with the local authorities to identify the landowner involved in the chemical discharge for further enforcement action.
"Currently, there is no impact on water supply to consumers as there are no treatment plants near Sungai Serdang," he added.
