A TOTAL of 1,500 saplings of various native tree species will be planted at the Sibu Golf Club in conjunction with the state’s “Greening Sarawak” campaign.

Sarawak Deputy Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii was present at the ceremony which involved the planting of the first 15 saplings.

The rest of the saplings will be planted in batches later at the 108ha golf club.

Sibu Golf Club management committee captain Wong Lay Nam thanked the Sarawak Forestry Department for providing the saplings to the club.

“Our golf course is the only one in the central region.

“With the planting of the 1,500 saplings of various species, I believe it will be greener and more beautiful,” he said.

The “Greening Sarawak” tree-planting campaign is in line with the Greening Malaysia programme, which aims to plant 100 million trees between 2021 and 2025.

Out of the 100 million trees, Sarawak plans to plant 35 million trees in five years.

Currently, more than 21 million trees have been planted throughout the state since 2021.

Also present at the event was Sarawak Forestry Department deputy director Happysupina Sait and Sibu Golf Club management committee deputy president Andy Hii Siik Kiong.
