SARAWAK needs educated youths to help it become a developed and high-income state by 2030.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said Sarawak needed young people who have been taught good values and take pride in being Sarawak citizens.
“We need to bring forth the best from Sarawak.
“For that reason, it is important for schools to help inculcate this in students so that we can produce the best from Sarawak,” he said at the SMK Methodist in Sibu Excellence Award presentation ceremony.
Chieng said Sarawak was focused on achieving its goal of becoming a developed and high-income state by 2030.
It has identified three main pillars to achieve this goal, namely economic prosperity, inclusive society and environmental sustainability.
“Sarawak needs highly educated citizens to create a strong region,” he said.
On the certificates and incentives, he hoped that they would motivate the students to continue to strive for excellence and that the school’s teachers would give their best to help them achieve this.
At the presentation ceremony, about 80 students received awards for excellence in their studies, co-curriculum activities and sports.
The school board, Parent-Teacher Association and alumni contribute RM20,000 every year for the student excellence awards.
