ANOTHER recycling centre has been set up in Shah Alam, Selangor, to encourage more households to take up the habit for the benefit of the environment.
Selangor tourism, environment, green technology and Orang Asli affairs committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said that giving domestic waste a second life would reduce the rubbish sent to the Jeram landfill in Kuala Selangor.
“This will cut down greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change,” he said at the launch of the 5R Carnival Programme and Section U13 Community Recycling Centre by Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).
“We need to make recycling part of our daily lives.
“Most materials we use can be recycled, including single-use plastics like bottles, straws and clamshell food containers that we see littered around public places.
“Our efforts to recycle is ongoing throughout Selangor.
“We have 250 active recycling centres. In Shah Alam alone, there are 16 recycling centres,” said Hee.
Meanwhile, Shah Alam mayor Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid said the U13 Community Recycling Centre would accept paper, cardboard, old newspapers, plastic, tin, aluminium, old clothes, used cooking oil, ewaste, glass bottles, metal and drink packets.
“MBSA built this centre to encourage the people to reduce, reuse and recycle for a cleaner and healthier environment.
“So far, this centre has collected 223 tonnes of materials,” he said. — By EDWARD RAJENDRA
