Owner was trying to rent out seized escooters, says DBKL

THE OWNER of two electric scooters which were confiscated by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was attempting to rent out the micromobility vehicles without a permit.

DBKL enforcement officers spotted the operator during an operation at Jalan Raja near Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur at 8pm on Saturday (June 4) and confiscated the two escooters placed on the road.

When contacted, a DBKL spokesman said that no permit was given for the operator to rent out the escooters.

"The operator was also aggressive towards the officers who were carrying out their duties,'' he said, adding that a police report had been lodged against the operator.

"The public are not allowed to operate or ride their escooters on public roads. This is a government mandate.

"We are still studying the guidelines (on the use) of escooters in Kuala Lumpur.

"Escooters and other similar devices are off-limits on main roads or in any part of the city,'' he said.

On April 26, the Transport Ministry had banned the use of certain micromobility vehicles on the roads.

The ban involves mopeds, personal mobility devices including electric scooters, devices with internal combustion engines or propelled by human power as well as personal mobility aids.
