MAKING her own baju kebaya paid off for Atira Remimurni Mohamed Ali when she was crowned champion in the search for Ratu Kebaya and Puteri Kebaya 2022.
The 29-year-old make-up artist was ecstatic when she was announced winner of the Ratu Kebaya category at the event held at Rumah Tangsi, Kuala Lumpur, during the Kuala Lumpur Dulu Carnival.
“It felt great to have my outfit recognised by the judges, while playing my role in promoting the beautiful kebaya outfit.
“I always love to wear baju kebaya because it looks elegant, decent and suitable for all occasions,” she said.
Dressed in a pink kebaya top with hand-sewn floral patterns, and blue fabric cloth with batik prints tied around her waist, Atira Remimurni said it resembled the traditional Nyonya baju kebaya.
“The outfit is part of the identity of our country’s rich culture and I hope we can showcase this to the rest of the world,” she added.
Aimed at promoting culture and heritage, the carnival was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Kuala Lumpur as a city in 1972.
The Search for Ratu Kebaya and Puteri Kebaya 2022 competition is a collaboration between the Miss Malaysia Kebaya (MMK) Organisation and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to promote the kebaya.
The competition featured four categories - Ratu Kebaya, Ratu Kebaya Kecil Molek, Ratu Kebaya Remaja and Puteri Kebaya.
Atira Remimurni was one of the four champions who walked away with RM500 in cash prizes.
The top five winners also received crowns, trophies, products and certificates of attendance.
During the event, finalists showcased their baju kebaya outfits that were unique in their own style and vibrant in colour.
MMK co-founder and president Dr Jason Hee said the organisation put in tremendous effort to preserve Malaysia’s diversity, heritage and promote tourism through cultural beauty pageants.
“We also provided education, training and opportunities to the participants during their pageant journey.
“More importantly, we are educating the young on baju kebaya and its origin, so they learn more about the costume.
“DBKL collaborated with us for the first time, and having it at the iconic Rumah Tangsi also helped promote Kuala Lumpur as a place of interest,” he said.
Also present during the event was MMK co-founder Nicole Fe Lynne.
