REPLACING all underground fire hydrants to above-ground hydrants in Selangor will cost RM40.7mil, says state local government, public transportation and new village development committee chairman Ng Sze Han.
He said there were 3,700 underground hydrants and it would cost RM11,000 to replace one unit with an above-ground pillar hydrant.
“Many underground hydrants are defunct and not accessible because of road resurfacing or other road works.
“In 2020, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department carried out maintenance on 94 pillar hydrants and 27 underground hydrants, costing RM250,000,” he told the state assembly in Shah Alam yesterday.
In a follow-up question by Tony Leong Tuck Chee (PH-Pandamaran) on utilising state funds to replace underground hydrants, Ng said the cost of maintenance was under the Federal Government’s purview.
“If the state wants to allocate funds to the department to replace fire hydrants, it will be limited.
“For more funds, we have to turn to the Housing and Local Government Ministry.”
To a question from Saari Sungib (PH-Hulu Kelang) for a cat shelter to be built in Ampang Jaya, Ng replied that a location for the facility had been proposed at Jalan UP 1/5, Ukay Perdana.
“It is estimated to cost RM500,000.
“It will include free cat adoption services as well as a cat hotel with reasonable rates,” he added.
