Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali (pic), the wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, will be featured in the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s (MPO) new digital concert campaign.
Called the MPO Patriotism Series, the campaign is in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.
Comprising seven videos, the series will be made available periodically for free on the MPO’s YouTube channel – MPO TV – from Aug 31 to Sept 16.
To be led by conductor Ahmad Muriz Che Rose, the series will witness MPO paying tribute to several iconic patriotic works and folk songs, presented in unrivalled symphonic arrangements.
The first video will feature a special rendition of Tanggal 31 Ogos (formerly written and sung by singer Ahmad C.B. popularised by Sudirman) performed by MPO and the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra musicians.
This will be followed by another video of MPO performing Negaraku and Bahtera Merdeka, uploaded on the same day on MPO TV.
Other works to be featured in the following weeks are Suhaimi Mohd Zain’s Cindai, Syed Haron Ahmad’s Warisan, Tan Sri Ahmad Merican’s Tanah Pusaka, Madzhi Johari’s Puteri Santubong and Datuk Mokhzani Ismail’s Malaysia Prihatin.
Each of the works performed will be sprinkled with video messages and commentary by renowned figures in the local music industry.
Other who will be featured in the series along with Dr Siti Hasmah include Mokhzani (ORTM music director), Datuk Johari Salleh (arranger), Madzhi (composer), Hairul Anuar Harun (lyricist), and popular Malaysian artistes Datuk Syafinaz Selamat and Aishah.
Ahmad Muriz said apart from marking National Day and Malaysia Day, the digital concert series was made as an appreciation towards the local symphonic compositions while conveying the expressions of national sentiment conceived in purely orchestral terms.
“It is an honour to present these famous patriotic works by legendary composers who have shaped the patriotic melodies throughout the years,” he said.
