JOHOR BARU: Johor cycling coach Junaidi Mohd Nasir has urged all cyclists to prioritise safety while on the road.

The 37-year-old, who was also the former national cycling coach, said there has been an increase in cycling activities during the recovery movement control order (MCO), especially among amateur cyclists.

“I have noticed that there has been a sudden surge in cycling activities after the MCO, with some bicycle shops running out of spare parts.

“News reports say some cyclists get into the highways. This is irresponsible and poses a danger not only to the cyclists but other road users as well,” he said.

Junaidi added that cyclists must put on safety equipment when out.

“These can now be easily bought online or at any bicycle shop.

“Be careful when out and consider the safety of others as well.

“Go to places with less traffic,” he said.

Junaidi said he hoped the government would consider mapping a cyclist-friendly road so that those who wish to cycle would have a track to use.

“Athletes also need to use the road, aside from the stadium and velodrome to train and it would also help if the government provided more cycling lanes on the road,” he said.

JPJ Johor acting director Azmil Zainal Adnan advised cyclists to wear protective gear when cycling, especially at night.
