PETALING JAYA: Not wanting three mixed breed puppies sold at a pet shop in Pudu to end up as "food", a dog lover set about to get them rescued recently.
The pet owner from Petaling Jaya, who drove all the way to the shop, bought all three puppies.
He then handed the puppies over to canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) from where his pet dog was adopted.
"We understand the concerns as it's strange for mixed-breed puppies to be sold at pet shops," said MDDB rescue coordinator Irene Low.
She said that is why, MDDB took the puppies in spite of overcrowding its sanctuary.
Saddled with dozens of puppies and lack of space to keep them all, MDDB will be holding an impromptu adoption drive on Sunday (Sept 20).
The adoption drive will be held from 10am to 6pm at Gasing Veterinary Hospital in Gasing Indah, Petaling Jaya.
"We have also rescued some pregnant dogs that will all be littering soon, and so it is crucial that we rehome as many puppies as possible at the adoption drive," said Low.
She added that MDDB also hoped to raise funds to settle some outstanding bills at Gasing Veterinary Hospital at the event.
"One of our old dogs Singgam had to be admitted at Gasing Veterinary Hospital due to some stomach issues and we were asked to pay a RM1,000 deposit but have not done so yet due to other financial commitments," said Low.
Singgam is still admitted at Gasing.
"We are hoping that Singgam will be able to receive some kind of sponsorship for his bill," said Low, adding that wellwishers could walk into the veterinary hospital and do their contribution at the counter.
Low reiterated that MDDB could only rescue more destitute puppies if the current ones with them have been rescued.
"Please come over and adopt our puppies as there are many more still on the streets waiting to be rescued," said Low.
