Three developers operating in Taman Seri Kerayong, Kapar, have been ordered by Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) to construct an on-site detention (OSD) pond and clear sand-clogged drainage networks following recent flash floods.
Klang mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said a dual-pronged approach of an OSD pond and regular drainage maintenance was essential to mitigate recurring flood risks in the area.
“It is an immediate temporary measure to tackle chronic drainage overflows during downpours.
“Developers in the area have been instructed to build a temporary holding basin designed to capture and regulate excess surface runoff before it inundates surrounding residential roads and properties,” he said during MBDK’s full board meeting at Bangunan Sultan Alam Shah in Jalan Perbandaran, Klang.
Abd Hamid added that construction of the 1,000m³ OSD pond was underway and would be completed soon to temporarily retain surface runoff during heavy rain before releasing the water gradually.
To complement the project, he said immediate desilting works were also being carried out across the neighbourhood’s drainage network.
“An inspection by our Engineering Department found severe sand accumulation from development sites and trapped debris had restricted water flow capacity during heavy rain, worsening flash floods.
“Clearing these bottlenecks will restore optimal flow and allow water to discharge efficiently.”
The move comes after a late afternoon downpour on Sept 29 caused flash floods in Taman Seri Kerayong, affecting 25 houses.
Floodwaters damaged furniture and electrical appliances, forcing residents to spend long hours cleaning up after mud and silt flowed into their homes.
MBDK Engineering Department director Mohd Zaidi Zainal said residents voiced deep concern over the flooding that had caused repeated traffic disruptions.
He added that the combination of targeted dredging and dedicated OSD pond represented a step towards long-term flood resilience in Kapar.
On a separate matter, Abd Hamid said mobile van counters would operate throughout October to assist the public in settling their assessment tax bills.
The mobile counters will operate from 9am to 1pm over two weekends – Oct 3 and 4 near Econsave in Klang Utama, and Oct 10 and 11 at Giant Hypermarket carpark in Bukit Tinggi.
For the convenience of market traders, MBDK has expanded the service to include market permit checks and payments.
“For the first time, the mobile van counter will be stationed at Balai JPKK Meru in Jalan Paip on Oct 2 from 8am to 11am, specifically for Jalan Paip morning market traders to make permit inquiries and payments without having to visit MBDK headquarters,” he said.
Stating that traders from other locations were also welcome to use the service, he urged them to make full use of the facility to ensure orderly and timely payments while reducing arrears.
He also reminded business owners that applications for 2027 council licence renewals would open from October to December.
Licence holders can apply online via the MyLesen portal, eliminating the need to visit physical MBDK counters.
