THE third edition of Penang International Travel Exchange (PITE), to be held from Oct 14 to 16, will go virtual.
The event will have 100 buyers worldwide and another 100 sellers taking part.
There will be three segments to cater for different time zones.
Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekeran said the three zones are the Asia Pacific market, Europe market and the North and South America market.
“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and international travel bans, we are moving PITE 2020 completely to a digital platform and it will be the first digital travel show held in Penang, connecting local sellers with buyers from around the world.
“The work done in the past two years through PITE must go on despite the pandemic as we need to rejuvenate tourism in Penang,” said Ashwin at a press conference.
“The second edition of PITE hosted in Oct 2019 drew 50 exhibitors with 75 buyers from 11 countries.
“Out of that number of buyers, 65% had never visited Penang before.”
State tourism, arts, culture and heritage committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, who was at the press conference, said the continual growth of the economy would
only be possible with enhanced marketing efforts to bring in international clients.
“Through PITE 2020, we will be able to showcase not only our tourism products but also demonstrate the infrastructure and facilities Penang has in holding virtual trade shows.
“I am confident that we are sending the right message to
business event organisers in Malaysia and around the world that Penang is ‘here for tomorrow’ and is ready to welcome travellers, both leisure and business.”
Present at the event were Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang chapter chairman Khoo Boo Lim and ACE Conferences and Exhibitions director Yen Tan.
