Spoilt for choice with 60 dishes

Customers at Restoran Tar Chong Mix Rice can choose from an extensive array of dishes, featuring tofu, spinach, potatoes, chicken, pork, beef and fish.

MIXED rice or chap fan is something I eat often as it is both affordable and nutritious.

The availability of a wide array of meat, seafood, tofu, eggs and vegetable dishes served buffet-style at restaurants is popular among locals.

It is my go-to type eatery during lunch because of its bang-for-its-buck concept.

With so many options, one can have something different every day with various combinations of vegetables and meat.

I was recommended by a friend to Tar Chong Mix Rice at Sunway Velocity, as he told me of the various options and that I would be spoilt for choice. Lo and behold, I was.

It had the regular mixed rice staples such as sweet and sour pork, braised tofu, braised cabbage, steamed egg custard, stir-fried Chinese vegetables, fried eggs, and an assortment of deep-fried items among its 60 dishes.

I chose salted egg marinated crab, along with Marmite chicken, braised pak choy, a fried egg, all drowned in the salted egg sauce.

The price for four dishes and a drink of soya bean came up to RM12, which is considerably higher than usual.

Then, the moment of truth – was it worth the price? I tucked in to find out.

The salted egg crab was good as it was creamy, salty and sweet.

The marmite chicken stole the show for me – it was sweet and tender for a chicken dish, which to me indicated that they make their dishes fresh, regularly.

The whirlpool of flavours from the braised veggie, Marmite chicken and the egg floss formed the perfect trinity of flavours that left me satisfied after each bite.

Undoubtedly, I was happy with the food I chose which had me already planning on what else I would want to try the next time.

Their fried chicken which looked so golden, crispy and flaky, and the tomato egg dish, something I have never tried before, were both immediately added to my list.

The dishes here seemed healthier and noticeably less oily than other spots that I have been to, and the food was cooked fresh daily.

It is no surprise that Tar Chong Mix Rice is packed during lunch hour, with workers from the nearby mall and the surrounding area coming for the same reason that I went – options, price and tasty dishes.
