IT IS important that the public understand the novel coronavirus while authorities take steps to control and prevent its spread, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
While conducting the ministry’s Info on Wheels rounds in Penang, he said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, through the Information Department, had taken proactive steps to ensure that the latest information was channelled to the public.
Through the ongoing Info on Wheels programme, 180 programmes have been carried out across the country so far, with an average of four programmes in each state every day.
The Info on Wheels programme involves placing a team of field officers to convey information to the people face to face.
“They can get instant clarification on any doubts from the teams present, ” said Gobind.
He visited the Desa Mayang Food Court during the programme in Bayan Lepas to hand out brochures on the fast-spreading virus to stall vendors and market-goers.
“Plenty of information has been shared with the public.
“RTM has broadcast 11 talk shows and over 234 news segments about the virus on television and radio, ” said Gobind.
“Bernama produced 149 news articles and 42 TV shows in four languages along with 30 info- graphics in seven languages which include Iban and Kadazandusun, ” he said.
Gobind urged the public to check the facts through Sebenarnya.my, a government portal that debunks fake news, before they share any information on social media platforms.
