Tourism industry players leverage on digital support

MORE than 100 tourism industry players took part in a session on Tourism Industry Distribution and Booking Platform by the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA).

MATTA members, hoteliers and travel partners were among those who attended the event at Jazz Hotel, Penang.

MATTA president Datuk Tan Kok Liang said the session was a first of a series of onboarding programmes.

He said the objective of the platform was to serve as an online marketplace; to streamline inventory and support various tourism-related sub-sectors for the benefit of the tourism industry.

“The platform also seeks to equip wider segments of the industry with the necessary tools.

“The tools would enable participants to make smart and prudent business choices by leveraging on the advancement in technology — as in shifting from bricks to bits,” he said.

He said the onboarding programme marked an important step for the tourism industry, particularly for the local tourism business landscape and to support over 3,600 MATTA members, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Penang and the northern region.

“MATTA initiated the digital transformation effort through a shareholder agreement between MATTA Technologies Sdn Bhd and Grabini Malaysia Sdn Bhd to develop a homegrown robust and advance online platform.

“It is designed to facilitate members in buying and selling their tourism products and services and to market themselves more effectively.

“The interactive platform shall deliver an enhanced technological backbone to support Malaysia’s tourism products and services.

“It will offer integrated digital support and wider visibility to industry players, in turn help to increase their sales and revenue potential.

“The support from industry players is critical to MATTA as we look to expand our influence and reach across industry channels and stakeholders that influence tourists looking to visit Malaysia,” he added.

Tan said the platform was part of the continued endeavour to achieve Malaysia’s strategic goal of welcoming 30 million tourists and RM100bil in tourist receipts by 2020.

MATTA will be conducting a series of road shows nationwide to welcome industry players onboard the platform commencing the third quarter of 2019 onwards.
