Graphite and ink shades in Malaysian art series

Guest artist Amin’s works are among the 55 artworks on display until June 29.

MAYBANK Foundation – the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of Maybank Group – is hosting the art exhibition “Melukis: Drawings in Graphite & Ink” at Balai Seni Maybank in Kuala Lumpur.

The exhibition, part of the foundation’s Balai Seni Art Series 2019, is a joint collaboration with artists from around Malaysia.

The participating artists are Arikwibowo Amril, Izzah Nazeri, K. Krishnan, Monica Lee, N. Shanthamathe, Shahbandi Samat, Thangarajoo M. Kanniah, guest artist S. Amin Shahab and members of Malaysian Colour Pencil Art Association (PSPW).

The 55 artworks on display were created using graphite and ink on canvas.

Maybank Foundation chief executive officer Shahril Azuar Jimin said the exhibition supported the group’s ongoing social mission to honour local artists’ creative efforts, and to celebrate the evolution of the arts scene in Malaysia.

“It is a major step forward for the local art industry as Maybank’s Balai Seni Art Series continues to grow in terms of the number of artists, artworks and visitors. A major factor is also the diversity of the artworks on display in terms of the disciplines and mediums.

“We are confident visitors will begin to appreciate the chosen mediums more at the exhibition,” said Shahril.

Some of the artworks are for sale and are priced between RM300 and RM35,000. The artists have pledged 20% from each sale to various charitable organisations supported by the foundation.

The exhibition is open to the public from 10am to 5pm (Monday to Friday) and 11am to 4pm (Saturday) until June 29. Admission is free.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a two-hour colouring workshop by PSPW president Hasren @ Uneh was held over the weekend at Menara Terrace in Menara Maybank, Kuala Lumpur.

Balai Seni Maybank has

hosted a diverse group of Malaysian and international

artists since its establishment in the 1980s. Some of the biggest names in the local arts scene have exhibited their works at the gallery.

Maybank Foundation was established in 2010 and actively supports community programmes under six key pillars: arts and culture, education, community empowerment, environmental diversity, healthy living, and disaster relief.
