IPOH Parade shopping centre was a hive of activity as various “heroes” and “villains” squared off against each other in a tightly-contested competition.
Iron Man, Aquaman, Kamen Riders and various Japanese anime characters made an appearance but ultimately, it was Ahri, a character from the League of Legends computer game that came out tops in the Cosplay Party 2019 competition.
Cosplayer Angel Chooi, who portrayed the character, took home RM2,000 worth of cash and prizes.
The kindergarten teacher, using her stage name King Angel, from Kuala Lumpur said she was overwhelmed as this was her first time winning at a cosplay competition.
“It took me months of preparation to source and make the costume and practise putting on the make-up,” she said.
“I really enjoyed myself during the event,” she added.
King Rusydi, who cosplayed as Kamen Rider Faiz, came in at second place while Hayate, as Elsa from the animation Frozen, came in third.
They won RM1,000 and RM500 worth of cash and prizes, respectively.
Judging the competition were three popular cosplayers Reina C, Bibi Chan and Kenjimura Chan.
About 29 participants took part in the competition and were judged based on their likeness to the original character they portrayed and a showcase of talents through performances.
A scene stealer during the competition was Fredston Wang, who cosplayed as the Monkey King from the video game version of Journey to the West.
His antics as a playful monkey swinging a golden cudgel had the audience in stitches and was roundly cheered for, winning him a consolation prize.
Apart from those who participated in the competition, there were also some 80 other cosplayers from all over the country that gathered at the event.
The competition was part of the Haru Matsuri, or Japanese Spring Festival celebration, which was held at the shopping centre for the first time.
Apart from the cosplay competition, there were also other activities included Japanese food workshops, a colouring contest
for children, snacks fair, street bazaar and other food-related activities.
