A THIRD-YEAR Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman student has bagged a merit award in the International Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) 2018 awards in China.

Thew Thung Liang from the Information, Communications, Technology and Computer Science Faculty won the award under the Tertiary Student Project category for his final year project titled “Augmented Reality System”.

He walked home with a certificate of appreciation.

In September, Thew won the MSC Malaysia APICTA awards, before his work was sent in for the international conference.

Thew said he felt extremely honoured and grateful for receiving the significant award.

“This goes to show that Utar students are not just equipped with strong information technology abilities, but also have good presentation skills.

“It was really competitive when thousands of teams from 17 countries were competing, and the judges asked challenging questions,” he said.

Thew said in the past two years, every time he passed by the faculty’s corridor, he would see photos of students who had received IT awards displayed on the wall.

“I told myself that someday I, too, would like to represent Utar in any IT competition, and win awards,” he said, adding that his mentor lecturer Tan Teik Boon was his inspiration.
