IT WAS an evening to remember for 50 children and 30 single mothers from Pertubuhan Badan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Darussalam in Gunung Rapat when they were brought shopping for Hari Raya at the Econsave Jelapang store.
The group were beaming from ear to ear as they went down each aisle, filling their shopping carts with stationery, clothes, food and toiletries.
“I have always wanted a green Baju Melayu and I am happy that I finally got one today,” exclaimed 10-year-old Adam Mohammad, adding that he was going to wear it on the first day of Hari Raya.
Held in the spirit of Ramadan and sharing, the Ipoh City Council (MBI) Senior Officers Association organised the trip with help from Econsave, Impiana Hotel Ipoh, the Abu Bakar Foundation and the Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club.
MBI Senior Officers Association President Zulqarnain Mohamad said that this is the fifth year MBI organised such a charity activity during the fasting month.
“It is our hope that our contribution will cheer up the children and single mothers in their preparations for the festive season,” he said.
The children and women were each given RM50 shopping vouchers to spend at the hypermarket.
Econsave Jelapang store manager Mohamad Shahazudin Manaf said that it has been the company’s practice to give back to the community, especially the underprivileged, during festivities.
“We care for those among us who may not have a family to celebrate Hari Raya with.
“We hope that this little gesture of goodwill from us will create some nice memories for the children and single mothers to go back with,” he added.
After the shopping treat, the children and women were treated to a buffet meal to break their fast at the Impiana Hotel and entertained with ghazal performances.
They were also presented with goodie bags containing books, school bags, stationery and other necessities.
