PEOPLE in Petaling Jaya will soon be able to pay for parking using the Smart Selangor Parking app.

The first phase of the new system will be rolled out on May 1, said Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Aziz.

The app is meant to eliminate the hassle of looking for a parking coupon as motorists will be able to pay for parking digitally.

“We will test this new system for a month in Dataran Sunway because the area is known for parking issues, and has the most number of commercial parking bays at 1,522,” said Mohd Azizi.

In Petaling Jaya, there are 24,484 street parking bays.

The Smart Selangor Parking app can be downloaded beginning April 23 from Apple App Store and Google Play.

Users need to create an account and top up a minimum credit of RM10.

Parking rates will remain at 60 sen per hour, RM5 per day and RM100 per month, between 8am and 6.30pm.

The app will alert users when the parking time limit is up so they can extend the hours.

The app only requires users to key in the street name where the car is parked, and they can pay or top up from wherever they are.

“With this system, there is no reason why motorists should not pay for parking.

“I believe it will help solve parking woes in Dataran Sunway,” he said.

The app also allows MBPJ enforcement officers to issue compounds, which users can check and pay for via the app.

“This integration of parking and compound system is a first in the country and I’m confident it will help our enforcement officers carry out their duties more efficiently,” Mohd Azizi said.

The enforcement officer only has to scan the car registration number or key it into the app to check if parking has been paid for.

“Once this system starts, the pay-and-display machines will no longer be used. There will only be two ways to pay for parking, which is via the app or the scratch coupons,” he added.

Earlier this year, MBPJ terminated the services of parking concessionaire Godell Parking Sdn Bhd and rolled out a new scratch-and-display parking coupon system while the app was being developed.

The app is created by Leading Innovative Technologies and Systems Sdn Bhd in collaboration with Menteri Besar Incorporated.

Other local authorities using the app, but without the compound feature, are Shah Alam City Council, Ampang Jaya Municipal Council and Sepang Municipal Council.
