SPAN: Use products that help save water

Mohd Ridhuan (left) with Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry, water and sewerage services sector senior secretary Dr Ching Thoo Kim discussing about the three-star rating system.

The body plans to create an awareness campaign to educate consumers on Water-Efficient Product Labelling Scheme (WEPLS) which will help them save water by using water-efficient products.

SPAN chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Ridhuan Ismail said according to research, the national average domestic water consumption per person was 209l per day, higher than the set national target of 180l.

“This campaign will help to communicate the water efficiency of a product based on a three-star rating system.

“Based on water consumption, water-related products will then be rated on a scale of environmental-friendliness,” Mohd Ridhuan said, adding that the rating would help customers see how much water the products used.

WEPLS labels for water-efficient products are shown on washing machines, water taps, toilets, showers and urinal flush valves.

Products with one star means it is water-efficient; two stars is highly efficient and three stars is the most water-efficient.

“By helping consumers use less water, these water-efficient products can also save them money,” he said.
