SIBU: The state government has been urged to re-open Pelagus Resort in Kapit.

The RM6mil 40-room resort, which overlooks the Rajang River, was closed down in January 2012 due to low occupancy rate.

Sarawak Central Region Hotel Association’s vice-chairman Lau Nai Meng told StarMetro that the resort still had potential to attract guests, especially foreign tourists, if it was managed properly.

“The state government should let the private sector run the resort as it is a good tourism destination to the hinterland of Kapit.

“It is located in the midst of a fantastic rainforest,” he said.

He said the resort served as a great base for jungle trekking.

Lau said the boat ride from Sibu and Kapit along the Rajang River to the resort offered a magnificient view of the lush greenery.

Then resort could be a popular retreat for those seeking to be near to nature.

“If the state government offer me to run the resort, I will spend money to re-develop it,” he said.

The hotel features a swimming pool and serves both local and western dishes.
