THE spacious, paved pathway along the Nanyang River in Qingzhou, Shandong province, came alive with folk artists showcasing their talent during our visit.

Tian Baisheng and Zheng Ziyan, both 65, sang of the beauty of Qingzhou in shulaibao kuaiban, a form of storytelling accompanied by the rhythmic beats of handheld bamboo clappers.
