Wanting to be heard

BROADCASTING student Alexis Seow may not have had her shot at modelling yet, but her chosen career path will likely be leading her to much more exciting opportunities.

Seow, who has only completed her pre-university course, took the opportunity to learn how to model through a local modelling academy.

“They taught me a lot of things, from how to project yourself through facial expressions to how to pose and style yourself,” she said.

But around the time that she finished her pre-university studies in the middle of last year, she was hired by a local television station for a full-time job, instead of the internship that she initially asked for.

“Although I do have an interest in modelling, I have always wanted to pursue a career in broadcasting.

“I think I get my inspiration from role models such as Marion Caunter and Giuliana Rancic, who get to do both,” she said.

After a stint as a scriptwriter, assistant producer and eventually television presenter, Seow jumped at another opportunity recently to work as a radio announcer.

“I saw it as a great opportunity for me because I like to venture out and try new things,” said Seow, who plans on continuing her studies in Canada after her contract expires.

“Work keeps me busy so I never have the time to seek out modelling jobs or go for casting calls, but I would still love to give it a try at least once,” she added.

Though she no longer has as much free time as she used to, she used to be very active in sports and had many hobbies such as track and field, swimming and cheerleading, as well as playing the guitar and piano.

Who is one person you would like to meet?

Taylor Swift! I have all her albums and I used pester my mum to buy all her T-shirts and other paraphernalia.

What is one skill you would like to learn?

“I actually do want to try Muay Thai. A lot of my friends are into Muay Thai but I have not had the time to give it a try.”

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

“I think the craziest thing I have ever done would probably be getting on the reverse bungee ride in Singapore. It’s 30 storeys high!”

What would you do to cheer a friend up?

“I would do anything to cheer a friend up. If my best friend were sad, I would go to her house, buy her cake and basically be like a boyfriend to her.”

Where is one place you would retire to?

“Paris. I went to Paris last year and I absolutely loved it. The people, the food, the scenery and, of course, the shopping!”
