SUBANG Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) held its annual Ramadan Bazaar Traders’ Seminar and Carnival (Karnival dan Seminar Peniaga Berjaya Bazar Ramadan MPSJ 2017) programme for this year’s Ramadan bazaar, with extra benefits for them.
The event was to remind the hawkers of the rules and regulations that must be followed, MPSJ’s current policies, ensuring that every trader implement the best practices in food handling and waste management throughout their business, and emphasizing recycling and efficient use of resources as well as the implementation of best practices towards a successful entrepreneurship.
A three-day seminar with Unilever Food Solutions Malaysia was also held for the bazaar hawkers called Chefmanship Academy (CA) from May 2 to 4 at the MPSJ multipurpose hall in Taman Puchong Indah.
Council president Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said MPSJ was the first local council in Selangor to use the online application for bazaar traders to apply for permits.
“We will select 15 hawkers from all locations to win our Exemplary Trader Award and RM500 as well as hampers contributed by our partners.
“The winning hawkers will get priority in securing a spot for next year’s Ramadan bazaar,” he added.
MPSJ continues with two of its eco-friendly initiatives with two campaigns that all hawkers at the Ramadan bazaar must follow.
The first one is part of the council’s “Love our Earth” campaign where hawkers are not allowed to give any plastic bags to their customers.
The second is a “Free from Polystyrene or Styrofoam” campaign where hawkers are banned from using polystyrene or Styrofoam at all Ramadan bazaars by MPSJ.
To ensure the rules are followed by all parties, MPSJ will conduct daily checks at the bazaar locations.
“This initiative is for the betterment of our earth, so we hope the residents will bring their own food containers,” said Nor Hisham.
Unilever Food Solutions Malaysia head Nusrat Perveen was also present as one of the partners for the programme and the host for Chefmanship Academy (CA).
CA will teach the hawkers to raise the quality of food, service, efficiency and become better cooks with an emphasis on smart entrepreneurship.
“We have positive feedback on food hygiene and cost calculation, which we have been sharing, and it is appropriate for food waste management to be included as approximately 8,000 tonnes of food are wasted daily in Malaysia and most of them are preventable food waste.
“CA is a first-of-its-kind initiative in Malaysia by a food service provider and we want to help ensure consumers are not impacted by health problems when they eat out, and food operators can help ensure that convenience and profit should not compromise on food hygiene and waste,” said Nusrat.
Unilever Food Solutions Malaysia also provides a social media platform via WeChat to be used as a tool by food operators in order to improve themselves.
It will include new recipes, in-game-applications and a direct link to its website, www.unileverfoodsolutions.com.my
The event was also attended by Mamee Double Decker (M) Sdn Bhd Islamic affair and government relations manager Ahmad Syukry Ibrahim and Al Hanee Food Supply Sdn Bhd director Naina Mohamed Abdul Jaleer as part of the three partners contributing to the programme.
