KULAI: Gambling centres are operating here with impunity.
Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching alleged that there are about 80 gambling outlets in the area and they operate within entertainment hubs such as snooker and karaoke centres.
"Most of the premises are located in shoplots and online gambling is especially popular," she said, adding that most of the gamblers are aged between 20 and 40 years old.
Teo added that bets are as low as 40 sen and gamblers are often offered free drinks to entice them to take part.
"These syndicates have been operating here for a while and residents are afraid to lodge reports for fear of reprisals," said Teo, adding that she had received many complaints, especially from housewives.
She said some of the outlets were located at Jalan Kelapa Sawit, Taman Prisma, Jalan Susur Kelapa Sawit and Jalan Tropika 1 and many are open 24 hours.
“They also provide illegal moneylending services to gamblers who do not have enough cash,” said Teo in a press conference at her service centre in Taman Tropika here.
Teo added that uncontrolled gambling often leads to other social problems with addicts neglecting their families and even resorting to stealing to fuel their habit.
When contacted, Johor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the public should come forward and lodge a report.
“Public information is vital for the police to take enforcement action against gambling dens and those that operate them.”
They can contact Johor police on their Facebook page or call 07-221 2999.
