Speedos, or tight swim trunks, are back in fashion. Once a staple for competitive swimmers, they are now seen as a fashion statement promoting self-confidence and body positivity.

You could see plenty of Speedos in the 1970s and 1980s, on beaches and in outdoor pools, before men started wearing board shorts in the 2000s.

But "budgie smugglers" came back in 2023, re-emerging in fashion blogs, TikTok videos and magazines.

While not a mass trend in swimming pools, they are gaining traction as a stylish choice, says style consultant Dunja Hess.

The trunks, typically made from synthetic materials, come in a slew of styles, from classic slips to retro-inspired cuts, all sharing a close fit and sporty character.

Hess says dark solid colours like navy blue or black are particularly popular, offering a balance to the striking cut.

But for a bolder look, pick bright red or retro designs with a white waistband. The trunks emphasize the body, so they should fit snugly without being restrictive.

Pair them with an open linen shirt and classic flip-flops, which are also on trend, for a stylish pool or beach look.

Add a pair of sunglasses with a distinctive frame to complete the retro style.

Hess advises against overly tight or loose models and skin-coloured tones that can appear nude. High-quality, opaque materials with thickness and elasticity are essential.

Above all, confidence is key for those wearing Speedos, as they suit men who present themselves boldly, regardless of their body shape or clothing size. – dpa
