One photo was all it took to bring the "Skittles manicure" back to the forefront, in turn making it a top trend of the season.

Bursting with bold, bright shades, these rainbow nails are a great way to add a touch of colour to dull outfits, while also pushing back against any prevailing gloom.

Selena Gomez caused a sensation at the last edition of Variety's Hitmakers Brunch, held on Dec 3 in Los Angeles.

But it was neither her long black velvet dress, nor her matching sandals, that got people talking. It was her nails.

The American actress and singer played it bold by sporting a "Skittles manicure", a trend generally associated with the summer season, but which has nonetheless gone down a storm in these darker times.

Candy-bright nails

Those who are not yet familiar with the "Skittles manicure" have probably already guessed that it takes its name from the famous candy that comes in several brightly coloured shades.

As you can see, this usually summery manicure gives rise to mismatched nails, each painted a different colour. It creates a veritable rainbow that contrasts completely with the browns, blacks and other dark shades that usually adorn nails in winter.

Gomez is one of the celebrities capable of making and breaking fashion and beauty trends. It is therefore no surprise to see her whipping up a storm with this manicure.

On TikTok, hashtags associated with this nail trend are already the source of hundreds of thousands of views.

There are videos showing manicures each more colourful than the next, and sometimes with surprising variations, including some created specially for the 2022 World Cup.

Why choose when you can wear them all?

The advantage of this manicure, as pointed out by nail artist to the stars Tom Bachik, who created Gomez's standout look, is that it gives free rein in terms of colours.

No more hesitation between a shimmery brown or a dark red, as here, any shade – or almost any shade – can do the trick.

"When Sel says she likes them all," jokes the manicure expert on Instagram, sharing a photo of the actress' nails.

Posting another picture of the American star, he adds "Peace, Love & Colour", as a caption for this season-busting manicure.

Gomez isn't the only one who's a fan of the fun and uplifting effect of rainbow nails. Chiara Ferragni, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Harry Styles are among the celebrities who have already tried – and adopted – the "Skittles manicure". – AFP Relaxnews
