Bridalwear evolves as fashion designers find new ways to change its vocabulary

Floor length gowns are not the only options for brides anymore. As designers experiment, bridalwear all around the world is evolving to include trendy cuts and silhouettes.

While less dramatic, they can still be visually striking and command attention for such a special day.

I’m every woman

Launching a new demi-couture arm of her fashion house, American designer Vera Wang is focusing on personalisation.

In an interview with Vogue, she says every woman is different and is using her designs to present her “own creative inclinations while expanding upon the vocabulary of bridal”. The collection spans different looks, from gowns to short slip dresses.

Beyond weddings

Oscar De La Renta is paying attention to the pre- and after-party realms of weddings for the current year. The Spring/Summer 2022 bridalwear capsule collection includes less dramatic pieces such as cocktail-like dresses.

This is seen as a way for the renowned luxury label to challenge the traditional long-sleeved floor-length dress, allowing for designs to be worn for another occasion.

Beautiful in all sizes

Under the tagline of “Bridal for everybody”, designer Katharine Polk, who hails from the US, is championing size inclusivity. Her creations has been seen to include everything from mini-dresses and corset to a trouser suit-set.

Celebrating all body sizes is important for Polk. Back in 2016, she opened up to Harper’s Bazaar about how she struggled with eating disorders.
