Richard Mille timepieces are instantly recognisable – with an unapologetically bold aesthetic, their iconic shape and size on the wrist are like no other design in the world of horology.
The development and the production of these exquisite timepieces involves a lot of research and innovation, combining architectural complexity with sophistication in design. The brand has consistently, over the years, come up with bold designs, impressive material innovations and development, as well as impeccable craftsmanship in the various setting variations of their ladies’ timepieces.
Richard Mille’s commitment to innovation has been observed in their use of advanced mechanical engineering solutions and new production methods, and the use of unconventional materials.
Many of the materials used for their timepieces originate from the automobile, aeronautics and sailing industries.
Cutting edge machinery is required when developing and working on these materials, which can be extremely challenging, notably in the case of Carbon TPT (Thin Ply Technology).
In 2017 (during the pre-SIHH launch), the first appearance of the Carbon TPT was in the iconic ladies models, the RM 07-01 and RM 037 Carbon TPT gem-set.
In 2019, a full bracelet in Carbon TPT for the RM 07-01 completed a sense of utter lightness and strength. Its powerful appearance is both sophisticated and sporty.
Now, the brand has introduced two new models with unprecedented adornments: the RM 07-01 Automatic Starry Night, with its extraordinary gem-set star motifs, and the RM 07-01 Automatic, with a sensuous and fascinating open-link bracelet arrayed in gold and Carbon TPT.
A signature feature of the Richard Mille men’s collection, Carbon TPT lends watches a unique and powerful appearance while simultaneously ensuring an optimal protection for the calibre.
The brand begun to include this material in their ladies watches several years ago, incorporating its use in the RM 07-01 and RM 037, gem-set in unsurpassed elegance.
At the slightest wrist movement, all eyes are riveted by a striking contrast between the sparkle of clear diamonds and the matte carbon contour that adorn both of these automatic timepieces.
The new iterations, the RM 07-01 Automatic Starry Night and the RM 07-01 Automatic look set to capture the world by storm with their elaborate and intricate designs.
Also making its debut is the RM 07-01 Snow Set, a full snow set in white gold, featuring a pave of diamonds across the entire dial.
Shimmering in the light in dancing reflections, the diamonds give this watch a completely luxurious aesthetic, making it a precious and intimate companion that exerts an almost carnal attraction.
Unparalleled material innovation
Carbon TPT, a high-performance material that is both light and strong, is used often in Richard Mille’s mens’ collections, however more ladies’ watches are being designed with this unique material, with different interpretations.By combining different materials to create a more feminine look while keeping to the brand’s DNA, Richard Mille has produced ladies’ watches that embody the spirit of the brand.
The surface of this material offers a striking appearance of damascene patterns and a moire sheen. Its matte aspect intensifies the agreeable warmth it offers to the touch and to the wrist.
The RM 07-01 Automatic Starry Night displays upon its Carbon TPT case a prong setting on the bezel and dial that highlights a profile gracefully enhanced with diamonds.
The bracelet of the RM 07-01 Automatic Starry Night weights just 29 grams, and is offered exclusively for the women’s collection.
With the Starry Night setting, the brand showcases its mastery of machining this particularly technical material.
Unlike gold, which an artisan can shape with their own tools to make prongs for holding the gems, the hardness and resistance of Carbon TPT require specialist CNC machines equipped with diamond bits to make this type of setting possible.
Hand-polished prongs in 5N red gold are produced separately and then embedded in the many stone settings of varying diameters destined to hold fast the piece’s 181 diamonds.
The RM 07-01 Automatic open-link bracelet in red gold and Carbon TPT offers an entirely new take on the open-link bracelet whose hand-finished links weave the red gold and Carbon TPT together.
It combines a bezel and caseback in Carbon TPT with a caseband in 5N red gold. In every respect a voluptuous bracelet offering a play of matte and shining effects, and also, most surprisingly, both suppleness and extreme strength.
These two new interpretations possess every one of the technical characteristics that have forged the reputation of the RM 07-01.
Both timepieces are driven by the in-house Calibre CRMA2, a skeletonised automatic movement with hours, minutes and a variable-geometry rotor.
Mechanics and ergonomics once again exhibit superlative care, while the sensuous lines of the tonneau case, including the detailing on the tonneau-shaped clasp, reflect this defining architectural feature of Mille watches, even to the shapely crown in red gold.
The RM 07-01 Automatic Starry Night and RM 07-01 Automatic, with their much-loved size and shape, combine beauty, comfort and technical prowess, captivating with their modern aesthetics and bold silhouettes.
Dazzling winter display
In the experienced hands of expert gem-setters, Richard Mille’s timepieces for women sparkle brightly with a thousand rays.
The technique called “snow setting” lends an opulent quality to these pieces, making them shimmer and sparkle, depicting a brilliant winter wonderland.
Whether it’s diamonds, rubies, emeralds, tsavorites, sapphires, opals or hematites, the right setting technique brings its secret beauty to light.
Chosen to fit with the shape of the watch, the surface to be covered and the brightness desired, the setting – medium, invisible or pave – enhances these precious stones which then capture light to make the watch sparkle.
The snow setting has an extra flourish of originality conferred by a seemingly haphazard arrangement of the stones.
Like the random flashes of snowflakes in the sun, this technique provides a scintillating effect and a natural brilliance.
They are set side by side, directly onto the selected material, with stones of differing sizes and held only by slender prongs drawn out by the craftsman, completely blanketing the surface.
The difficulty of this setting resides in the selection and arrangement of stones, playing on their varying diameters from 0.5 to 1.6mm.
The gems must snugly fit to a micron’s precision, while maintaining the illusion of a random pattern. The snow setting thus sets pride of place to the daring and experience of the individual gem setter.
Every snow setting is completely unique, just like each stone. By embracing the volume of the watch to enhance its sensuous curves, this setting emphasises an artistic dimension that permeates the women’s collections, particularly on various interpretations of the RM 07-01 and the RM 037.
To highlight this technique, the brand recently presented a full snow set version all in white gold that sparkles with a pave of diamonds on the bezel that is continued across the entire dial. Both the gem-set caseband pillars and open-link bracelet complete this breathtaking picture.
