The start of a new year brings the opportunity to re-evaluate old habits and pledge to start new ones. If you still have not made your resolutions for the year, maybe consider the suggestions below?

It's never too late to pick up better habits when it comes to your makeup or skincare practices. We're still in January after all, and there will be almost a year for you to embrace a better, healthier and more wholesome beauty routine.

Resolution One: Pay attention to hygiene and cleanliness

All makeup bags are full of brushes and sponges for putting on powders, foundations or eyeshadow. Birgin Huber, from the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW) advises regularly giving these beauty supplies a wash.

"You should regularly and thoroughly clean your brushes and sponges with soap, dish soap or a mild shampoo, and then let them dry completely," says Hubert. And “to avoid coming up short, it’s good to have a spare brush or sponge around.”

Resolution Two: Don’t use other people’s cosmetics

Forgot your lipstick and need to borrow some? “Products that come into direct contact with mucous membranes can transfer germs and should thus be used by only one person,” says Huber.

Resolution Three: Keep your skin clean

It was a long day, full of stressful work meetings, and you just want to flop in bed. But no matter how tired you are, take off your makup.

Otherwise, it will mix with sweat and dirt and clog pores, leading to blemishes. And don’t forget your eyelashes – the sensitive hairs otherwise tend to break off.

Resolution Four: Throw out old products

One day, when you have nothing to do, go through the cabinets in your bathroom and toss out all your expired cosmetics.

For products that have already been open, check the consistency, colour and smell to determine if they’re still useable.

“If the product has changed colour or smell, for example, it should be tossed,” according to expert Huber.

To ensure your products have a longer shelf life, they should be opened only shortly before you use them. Always use clean fingers to apply them, and then tightly reseal them again.
