It is only April but 11-year-old student Kimberly Chan has already put Malaysia on the world map not once, but 15 times this year. The soprano from Kuala Lumpur has participated in a string of virtual vocal competitions, winning 15 international awards in just four months.
Among her achievements are a gold prize in musical theatre at the New York Music Award 2026 (Season One), a poetic interpretation special prize at the UK International Music Competition 2026 (Season One), and recognition at the Berlioz International Music Competition 2026 (Season One).

Her most notable achievement was at the International Music Competition Berlin (Grand Prize Virtuoso) in February, where she received the first prize, emerging as the sole Malaysian winner.
In recognition of this honour, Kimberly was invited to perform at the Berlin Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal, a renowned concert hall that is home to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, on April 1. She sang Part Of Your World from Disney's animated film The Little Mermaid.
She was the only Malaysian among 46 performers from countries including the United States, Turkiye, Norway and Italy.
"I am extremely happy that I achieved so many awards this year. Performing solo in Berlin was my first overseas experience, and having the opportunity to perform before an international audience was a great honour. Singing in an acoustic hall in Berlin was truly a mesmerising experience," says Kimberly in an email interview.

A Year Seven student at a private school in Kuala Lumpur, she is proof that passion, perseverance and self-discipline can go a long way in shaping a child’s dreams.
"I have learned to manage my time wisely and set aside time to practise after completing my homework. I love singing because I am often inspired by other singers. One challenge is being mindful of my diet to keep my voice in optimal condition, as I perform frequently.
"I practise consistently and always warm up my voice during my sessions. My idol is Filipino-American singer Angelica Hale (who competed in the 12th season of America's Got Talent and was the first runner-up). It would be a dream come true to perform with her one day," says Kimberly, who also plays the harp and is currently pursuing Grade Eight.
Kimberly's passion for singing began at the age of seven and since then, she has trained under a vocal specialist. Alongside her father, Andrew Chan – who heads a KL-based performing arts company – she performs as part of a father-daughter duo.

The pair regularly sings duets, practises daily and produces music videos for YouTube. This shared musical journey has nurtured Kimberly's vocal development while providing valuable opportunities to perform live at various events and functions.
Kimberly has also taken on several notable roles on stage at school. In 2024, she played the lead role of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Last year, she starred as Summer Hathaway in School Of Rock, earning recognition at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, where she became the youngest nominee for Best Supporting Actor. She also played Miss Honey in Matilda The Musical JR that same year.
Next May, she is set to take on another iconic role as Wednesday Addams in her school's upcoming production of The Addams Family.
