Emellia Shariff comes from a family of hardworking women. Her mother worked three jobs to support her four children, and her three daughters were expected to pull their weight. They all woke up early every morning to help her mother make kuih and deliver them. But her brother did not have to help. He was sent to live with their aunt so he could focus on his studies.
“I was the youngest and I too would have to wake up early to help deliver the kuih to different stalls before school. I remember feeling scared as I had to cycle in the dark. I would ask my mum why abang couldn’t do it instead?” recalls Emellia, 27.
