Super hairy dogs: These breeds shed more than others

All dogs need grooming, just like we need our hair brushed several times a day, but some dogs are furrier than others. Here are some breeds famous for their shedding abilities.

Malamutes and Huskies

These huge dogs are bred to live in super cold snow. The outer coat has long tough "guard hairs" and underneath there are one or even two coats of shorter, denser fur. Just like we wear layers in cold weather, these double and triple coats keep the dog warm.

Although they’re beautiful animals, they shed heavily. Most will shed in spring and autumn but in tropical Malaysia, you’ll see a constant fall of fur.

German Shepherds and Alsatians

You’d not think it as they have a sleek look, but these popular European guard dogs have a super thick double coat. These clever dogs sprinkle fur all year round but twice a year they "blow their coat" which is a fun way to explain they completely shed their undercoat and grow a new one.

Labradors and Retrievers

These popular lovable dogs were bred for duck hunting originally, so their coats are designed to keep them warm even if they’re in and out of cold-water lakes. These lovely pets shed all year round and blow their coats too. As horses do the same, posh folk sometimes add in a grooming session with a rubber curry brush that works on both species.
