There is no one-size-fits all for determining the healthy size for your pet. Age, size, shape and overall health are all considerations. Also, some cats are simply naturally chubbier than others.
Start by examining your pet from above when your pet is standing up on all fours. The shape should be fairly sleek. If the belly sticks out, then there’s too much fat around the tummy.
Then, pet your cat thoroughly, paying particular attention to the rib area. If you can’t feel ribs, there may be too much padding too.
Both these checks can be difficult if your cat has a long coat.
Another way is to look at how active and agile your kitty is. If your pet is under 10 years old, he or she should be able to chase a ball or wrestle happily and easily with a furry friend. Also, healthy-sized cats should be able to jump on and off the sofa and coffee table easily.
If you find your pet is too fat, be gentle. Indoor cats may eat out of sheer boredom. Ex-strays and rescues may have anxious attitudes towards food.
To your pet, a controlled diet can be perceived as punishment. So go very easily, reducing portion a tiny bit. Also, play and cuddle more.
And if you have a clever cat, good luck!
