Staying safe when playing pickleball

Do a proper warm up before playing to help reduce any injury risk.

These are some common pickleball injuries and how to prevent them:

1. Ankle sprains

They are more common in pickleball due to quick lateral movements, such as shuffling from side to side, to get to the ball. Wear supportive shoes - like court shoes and not running shoes which are for running forwards - that protect the ankles. Warm up properly and avoid sudden sharp pivots.

2. Wrist or forearm strain

A result of gripping the paddle too tightly or overuse, these can be prevented by relaxing your grip, stretching before the game and resting in-between games.

3. Shoulder fatigue

Caused by repeated overhead motion or poor technique, it can be prevented by strengthening the shoulder muscles and doing a proper warm up. Also, focus on smooth, controlled strokes instead of smashes or power hits.

4. Lower back discomfort

Bending forward or twisting awkwardly during play might result in lower back discomfort. To prevent this, engage your core, practise good posture and avoid overreaching. Instead, move your feet.

5. Knee soreness

While less common than in other racquet sports, knee soreness could result from sudden stops or jumps. Warm up your legs, use proper landing techniques and don’t push through if in pain.

6. Eye injuries

Being hit in the eye by a fast ball is painful, so protect your eyes by wearing protective eye gear, especially if you’re playing competitively.

7. Falls

Wearing proper footwear without shoelaces will ensure not tripping over them. Also, learning the correct techniques of moving on court and hitting the ball might help.
