Perched on the first floor of The Gardens Mall (TGM) in Kuala Lumpur is Tapestry. If the name of the eatery rings a bell, that’s probably because you might have heard of or been to the original Tapestry in Chow Kit, KL.
The second eatery in the Tapestry umbrella is owned and operated by Wyld Group Asia and according to CEO Tan Boon Wy, the brand’s expansion happened organically.
“We’ve always dreamed of growing Tapestry beyond Chow Kit, and when The Gardens Mall came knocking, it felt like a natural next step. It’s such a well-loved destination, and we couldn’t resist the chance of bringing Tapestry to a space where people already come to shop, gather, and eat,” says Tan.
The eatery’s core food values are built around Australian café culture and sensibilities with big, bold flavours harnessed around comfort and familiarity. The menu has also been expanded slightly to include new additions.
“The essence of Tapestry is the same, we wanted guests at TGM to enjoy the same experience they’ve come to love at Chow Kit. That said, growth gives us room to play, so the menu has been expanded with more variety, blending Eastern and Western influences, while still keeping those comfort dishes that people come back for,” says Tan.

There is plenty to whet the appetite at the restaurant and you would do well to start with the Egg Drop 2.0 (RM33).
This open-faced sandwich features sourdough bread topped with fluffed eggs, Sarsi-glazed beef bacon, caramelised onions and Sriracha aioli. The combination is designed to induce immediate oohs and aahs of appreciation.
The star of this ensemble cast is the fluffed eggs, which are incredibly light and airy. The beef bacon also deserves special mention as it is fabulously crispy and studded with rich salt-laden undertones.
The sourdough soaks up all the flavours in this dish and is the backbone of this configuration.
Next up, indulge in a smoothie bowl in the form of the Avocado Dream (RM28). Now, a smoothie bowl may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this particular edition is worthy of the “dream” moniker.

Made up of creamy avocado, strawberry, blueberry, pomegranate, mango, yogurt, milk, brown sugar, granola and chia seeds – this rich, fulfilling brunch dish is a surprising winner.
The success of this dish is underpinned by its many textural contrasts – from the creaminess of the avocados to the voluptuousness of the berries and mangoes and the crunch of granola.
It all comes together beautifully, so much so that its appeal is evident from the very first mouthful.
Move on to more Middle Eastern fare in the form of the Garlic Labneh Salad (RM35).

Here, house made garlic labneh (strained yoghurt) is paired with harissa pumpkin, beetroot, spice-roasted cauliflower and greens.
Mix this all together and revel in a wonderful confluence of flavours, bolstered by the spice-riddled undercurrents of the labneh.
From the pastas on offer, have a go at the Smoked Duck Carbonara (RM40).
While all the elements of a good carbonara are at play here, the smoked duck itself has been cut into large, clunky pieces that steal some of the pasta’s thunder. The pasta itself is fairly standard – silken and luscious but not particularly memorable.

The Shepherd’s Pie (RM40) meanwhile offers a large slice of redemption.
The thick layer of mashed potatoes here are creamy and smooth and this spud-filled goodness segues into a tomato-enhanced minced beef protagonist that leads this dish to a jubilant finale.
For a foray into sweet territory, look at indulging in Tapestry’s Berries Sundae Waffles (RM30).
The waffles are dotted with fresh strawberries and blueberries as well as a berry compote, brownie crumble and vanilla ice-cream to round things out.

The waffles are delightful – soft on the inside, lightly crispy on the outside and enhanced with the fruity connotations of the berries and brownie. The vanilla ice-cream adds a lovely ice-cold sheen to the waffles and takes it to whole new levels.
If you’d like to wash your meal with down a cup of coffee, you can rest in the knowledge that the eatery’s range of caffeinated selections are powered by Eight Ounce Coffee Co, a homegrown brand that uses 100% Arabica beans sourced from premium producers around the world.
Enjoy a cup of cappucino (RM13.80) which showcases the beauty and virtues of the brand’s beans, which highlights java that is smooth with a fruity finish.
Moving forward, Tan says there are plans to expand the Tapestry footprint throughout the Klang Valley, given the positive response from diners in both the original outlet as well as the new one.
“We do see Tapestry growing further in the Klang Valley, and who knows, maybe even regionally one day. The key for us is to grow thoughtfully and make sure that wherever Tapestry goes, people still feel that same heart and soul of the brand,” he says.
