LOVE furries but have never owned one? Here are some basic care for dogs:

Healthcare

Vaccinations for pups and then regular top ups, plus monthly flea and worm treatments. You should also pay for neutering/spaying, a one-off cost. Set up an emergency fund for little accidents like cuts, bites, when the dog chews off and swallows a bit off the sofa, etc.

Training and socialising

The first 18 months are all about teaching your pet manners. They have to learn to walk on the leash, not to pee and poo in the house (unless you use poo and pee pads), and they also need to learn company manners.

Feeding

Dogs can’t live on rice, they need meat and vegetables too. Pups need four or five small meals a day. Adult dogs need two meals – breakfast and dinner. Some have a small lunch too. Budget for wet food and biscuits.

Exercise

If you have a garden, you can get by with one walk a day. But otherwise, it’s three walks a day or you will have home accidents. Pups need to be taken out when they’re ready – up to 10 times a day for the first few months.

Grooming

Fluffy dogs all require daily brushing as well as regular professional bathing and nail trimming. Short-haired dogs can be bathed at home. In the hot weather, it’s once a week.

Playtime

Dogs are social! If you have two, they can play together, but they’ll still want to be with you because you’re their human. Budget at least half an hour in the morning and a few hours at night.

Tip: If you’re not yet certain about getting a pet, offer to holiday sit for a friend’s dog for 10 days first.
