The Dacia Sandero ended 2024 as the best-selling new car in Europe, across all engine types. The compact car dethroned the Tesla Model Y, which nonetheless remained firmly atop of the list of best-selling electric cars.

In 2024, 12.9 million new passenger cars were sold in Europe, an increase of 0.9% year-on-year, according to the latest data from JATO Dynamics. Despite this increase, sales are still below pre-COVID-19 levels.

For the first time, the Dacia Sandero has topped the charts as the best-selling car model of the year. The Tesla Model Y -- Europe's top-selling car last year -- finished in fourth place in the 2024 list. The Romanian-branded compact car won over many buyers with its attractive price and practicality. In addition, SUVs continue to break sales records, now accounting for 54% of all new registrations in Europe. In 2024, 6.92 million SUVs were sold on the Old Continent, up 4% on 2023. — AFP Relaxnews
