As people try to co-exist with Covid-19, industries are scrambling to return to pre-pandemic times, the architecture and design sectors notwithstanding.

The recent Malaysian Institute of Architects, or Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) Awards and Annual Dinner 2022, held June 18, doubled as a celebration of good design as well as a return to normalcy.

Since its inception in 1990, the Awards has continued to give recognition to Malaysian architects who pursue excellence in design, promote the advancement of quality built environment that creates a positive impact socially, physically or culturally in Malaysia, as well as highlight the diversity of Malaysian architecture.

"The bar is set very high by the jury to ensure that the quality and standard of the awards is maintained throughout. It is amazing to see such a wonderful spread of projects highlighting the best and most significant projects and their architects receiving the recognition and adulation they deserve.

"The most amazing fact of all is that we have just come out of a global pandemic, which has affected our construction industry to the extent that not only were many projects delayed, there were many sites where the work had to cease entirely.House No 100 by DRTAN LM Architect took home the Gold award under the Interior Design category.House No 100 by DRTAN LM Architect took home the Gold award under the Interior Design category.

"Emerging from such a trying time and still seeing wonderful buildings being produced in that tumultuous period is a testament to the determination and resilience of Malaysian architects and our will to prevail through insurmountable odds," said PAM in a statement.

The winners were determined by a jury panel comprising architects Datuk Ezumi Harzani Ismail (Jury Chair), Chan Seong Aun, Sng Wilson, Datin Dr Norwina Mohd Nawawi, Farik Abd Ghaffar, Nik Rahiman Nik Mohd Taib, and Mitchell Evan Gelber.

In all, a total of 101 valid submissions across 12 categories were received – Single Residential, Multiple Residential (Low Rise), Multiple Residential (High Rise), Industrial, Education, Adaptive Re-Use, Interior Design, Commercial (Low Rise), Commercial (High Rise), Commercial (Mixed Development), Special Category and Sustainable Development Goals.

During the event, PAM also conferred architect David Teh Teik Lim with the PAM Gold Medal 2022 and announced architect Dr Tan Loke Mun as the PAM Kington Loo Medal 2022 recipient.Ceylonz Suites by Tan’CK Architect is the Gold medal winner under the Commercial High Rise category.Ceylonz Suites by Tan’CK Architect is the Gold medal winner under the Commercial High Rise category.
