Last year, more than 200 species of freshwater fish were discovered by scientists. Among them are the Wolverine pleco – a catfish with yellow spots and fearsome spikes that act as powerful weapons – and the Mumbai blind eel, a bright red creature.
These discoveries confirm that we are still far from having unravelled all the mysteries of the creatures that inhabit the planet's underwater areas.
