Call for entries: Contest to design a dream house that responds to pandemic situations

Considered the first design challenge of its kind, the Arcasia Committee on Young Architects (ACYA) and Yogyakarta Young Architect Forum (YYAF) Work From Home Workshop 2020 is currently calling for submissions.

The contest is open to all architects under the age of 41 from the 21 Arcasia (Architects Regional Council Asia) countries. Undergraduate students are also allowed to join.

The theme of the contest is,"Design a dream house that responds to pandemic situations”.

“What we want to see are new creative solutions to creating a dream home that is considerate of health security, self-sufficiency and a ‘happy living’ lifestyle. We hope participants will be able to address issues such as control of the spread of Covid-19 to homes, adaptability of spaces to family needs and situational needs such as single member family quarantine, growing of own food, sustainable and energy-saving homes, and interesting architecture, ” said Ridha Razak, chairman of ACYA 2019-2020.

The dream house should be designed for bachelors, young couples, big families or senior citizens.

“This contest is very significant as it’s part of the initiative to envision the future of house design to be resilient not only to handle natural disasters but also global pandemics. Our lifestyle and way of life will never be the same and people will see the world differently after the crisis is over.

“Therefore we think that after all this is over, there will be a paradigm shift towards the work from home culture and digitalisation of life and business for years to come, ” said Ridha.

To date, the committee has received almost 500 registrations from 10 countries including Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

“We are looking forward to seeing creative and innovative solutions that are sustainable in its design and have social, economical and environmental considerations. We hope that participants will be sensitive to the effect of Covid-19 to people during the lockdown and start thinking outside the box on how to make their dream house resilient to any challenges.”

Registration closes on April 12,2020 while the deadline for submissions is April 22,2020. Finalists’ works will be put online for public viewing and presented through a webinar conference in June.
