Instead of giving Nicolas a general anaesthetic as is usual for a kidney transplant, he instead received a spinal anaesthetic and sedatives to allow him to be aware throughout the procedure. — TNS

When John Nicolas went under the knife for his kidney transplant last month (May 2024), the Chicago native was fully awake and aware.

The 28-year-old participated in a major first for the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Transplant Center in the United States.
