Getting to grips with the ‘power grip’: study

By studying the bones of human ancestors, scientists now think that the “power grip” phenomenon started much earlier than previously thought.

Scientists say an analysis of fossil hand bones of the species Australopithecus africanus that lived in southern Africa about 3 million to 2 million years ago indicated this human forerunner may have used its hands in ways very much like modern people.
