Cooking up a storm every week with recipes, helpful tips and other food-related stories.
COOK'S NOOK by AMY BEH
WHETHER it’s an unusual dessert, nourishing meals for a woman undergoing confinement or a complicated dish to impress your mother-in-law, celebrity chef Amy Beh has been dishing out recipes through Star2.
From young, Beh – an ex-teacher – was always helping out her late mother and grandmother in the kitchen cooking for a large family.
With a keen interest in sharing recipes, she approached The Star in 1995 offering to write a weekly culinary column for readers. Her first column, At Home, made its debut in September 1995.
“My first column was published in Star Two on Sept 7, 1995 and it presented me with the opportunity to lend my expertise and services towards the cultivation of a ‘cooking-loving society’,” says Beh in a recent interview.
Beh points out that she has seen an interesting evolution of her cooking column since she started writing for The Star almost 18 years ago.
“When I first started writing recipes, it was printed in black and white! Today it is available online on The Star Online website,” she says.
Beh’s Cook’s Nook column was uploaded onto Kuali.com, a website started by The Star Online in 2003. Kuali.com has since been folded into The Star Online, so all articles relating to food is now available in Lifestyle under Food or Viewpoints where columnists are listed.
“It is such a thrill to be approached by strangers who recognise the name Amy Beh as synonymous with Kuali. I am delighted to know my column is enjoyed and it also means that The Star has successfully reached its readers,” she says.
Beh stressed that she is very pleased that all Malaysians, whether living at home or abroad, can now access her recipes so easily and conveniently.
Inspired by good food and fresh natural ingredients Beh says she “loves the feeling of eureka when I get the right combination and balance in taste successfully in each new creation.”
“The Star has been a good platform for me with its wide readership and following, so I am happy to have a column with them,” she says.
“I believe that my column has helped a lot of young ladies in their effort to learn how to cook and in the process help them become better wives and daughters-in-law,” Beh points out.
Apart from sharing recipes, Beh had a section under Culinary Conundrums which provided useful tips to readers on cooking and allows readers to write in with their questions.
“I have been most touched by some readers’ feedback on how my column has improved their relationship with their in-laws and even impressed their husbands,” she says.
