Mother’s Day: She’s the queen of his heart

“She is the queen of my heart, ” says Muhammad Nazrin Ahmad, 29, of his mother, Hasimah Hamzah, 62, whom he credits for shaping him into the man he is today.

“She gave birth to me and raised me,” he says with emotion. “Our mother-son relationship is special and nothing in the world can come between us.”

Hasimah, he explains, has always been there for him, often with nuggets of “good advice” to guide him through his life.

“Even while growing up, whenever I was in trouble, she would always have some wisdom for me,” adds the IT services executive.

“Some advice that she gave me, which I still remember today, is: ‘Always treat others with respect. Follow your heart and trust your instincts’, ” he says.

Nazrin’s parents live in Bandar Tun Razak, Pahang and because he lives in Kuala Lumpur, he usually celebrates Mothers Day with a video call to his mother, who is a housewife.

However, he and his four siblings (he has three sisters in Johor and Pahang, and a brother in Johor), always make it a point to celebrate together when they are able to.

“When my siblings and I are all back in our hometown, we’d prepare a barbecue, cook her favourite meal, and bake her favourite chocolate cake, and then have a special meal together.

“Of course, this year, because of the pandemic and MCO, we aren’t able to balik kampung and we don’t know when we will be able to, ” he says.

They plan to have a group family video call with their mother this Mothers Day.

“We want to make sure that our mum is happy and assured that we love her and always have her in our hearts even though we can’t be there in person at the moment, ” he says.

Nazrin notes that the MCO has impacted their mother-son relationship in a good way.

“We’re even closer now, even though we may be far apart in distance. Almost every day, I will video call her just to see her face and her smile, ” he says.

He admits that he is worried because of the pandemic.

“I don’t want any of my family members to be affected by it, I want my Mum to live a long, happy and healthy life, so safety first, ” he concludes.
