Walter Koenig, the Star Trek franchise's original Chekov, died Sunday (Oct 25) of natural causes at his home in North Hollywood. He was 90.

"Walter helped inspire audiences with his optimism, humour, and adventurous spirit. Beyond Star Trek, his long and distinguished career showcased his versatility as an actor and his genuine love for his craft," his representative said in a statement, noting that Koenig's daughter Danielle and niece were with him when he died.

The actor is best known for his role as the Russian crewman in Gene Roddenberry's seminal 1960s sci-fi series and in seven Star Trek films. Koenig also played senior Psi Cop Alfred Bester in space drama TV series "Babylon 5."

Born in Chicago on Sept 14, 1936, and raised in Manhattan, Walter Marvin Koenig was the son of Russian Jewish parents who emigrated from Lithuania.

Koenig began his stage work in high school in Riverdale, New York, but attended Iowa's Grinnell College as a pre-med major because of his interest in psychiatry, later transferring to UCLA and receiving a B.A. in psychology.

With a professor's encouragement, he enrolled in New York's Neighborhood Playhouse, where his classmates included Christopher Lloyd, Jessica Walter and James Caan, and received a scholarship for his work.

With over six decades of professional acting experience, Koenig flourished across theatre, television and film, with his television work beginning in 1960 on the series A Day In Court.

He also produced films, directed stage productions, and wrote books, screenplays, TV episodes, plays and a comic book series. Koenig published his memoir, Warped Factors: A Neurotic's Guide To The Universe, in 1998.

"Walter's legacy extends far beyond the screen," his rep said. "Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it."

Koenig's Star Trek co-star George Takei, who played Sulu, paid tribute to his friend and colleague on social media.

"My heart is heavy," Takei wrote on Facebook. "Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.

"Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too," he wrote, concluding, "Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."

Following news of Koenig's death, tributes to the actor came in from across the Star Trek universe.

"Very sad to lose this old friend," Voyager and Starfleet Academy star Robert Picardo captioned an image of himself with Koenig on X.

The Next Generation star Denise Crosby wrote, "Just got the news of the passing of one of my @StarTrek family members, the iconic #WalterKoenig. The laughs, Cons, flights, great meals, beautiful locations, and the moments we shared with fans around the world will live with me forever. Restful peace, my friend."

The official Star Trek Instagram account posted a gallery of images of the actor with the caption, "Rest among the stars Walter Koenig."

He was married to actor Judy Levitt from 1965 until her death in 2022. Their son, Andrew, died by suicide in 2010 at age 41.
