Texan actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, met with Pope Leo XIV during the pontiff's weekly public audience at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, according to a social media post from Catholic News Service on Wednesday.

McConaughey has been open with his faith and even released a book in 2025 called Poems & Prayers that touched on the subject.

"I'm a believer. I believe in God," he told Relevant magazine last year. "I go to church once a week, so Sunday, I go and I pray and I do inventory."

The papal visit comes as he has reportedly been in Italy filming for Positano, an upcoming Netflix movie starring McConaughey and Oscar-winner Zoe Saldana. The movie, which Netflix called a "romantic caper," will see the pair team up for a high-stakes heist on Italy's Amalfi Coast, according to a July release from the studio.

Positano will also feature Oscar nominee Toni Collette and Anora breakout Karren Karagulian. Its director, Daniel Roher, is known for his documentary work, most notably Oscar-winner Navalny.

Netflix has not announced an official release date for the film. – The Dallas Morning News/TNS
