Malaysian-born artiste Mimi Chu has opened up about the sacrifices she made to support her family, revealing that her two sons were unhappy by her absence during their childhood.

In a recent interview with Hong Kong media, the 72-year-old recalled spending much of her early career working in Hong Kong, while her husband and two sons remained in Singapore.

The arrangement meant she sometimes went as long as six months without seeing her family, leaving both her sons unhappy about being separated from her.

“I knew both my sons were unhappy with me back then... But I had no choice because I had signed contracts and couldn’t simply walk away from my commitments,” she said.

In recent years, Chu realised she needed to prioritise her family and well-being by cutting back on work.

“I can’t continue working from morning until the middle of the night like I used to. That’s no way to live,” the King Of Mahjong (2015) star said.

Chu now spends most of her time in Singapore with her eldest son and his family.

Her younger son has also come to understand the sacrifices she made to provide them with a better life.

Despite her quieter lifestyle, Chu remains active, taking care of the household chores herself in her double-storey home rather than hiring a domestic helper.

“I’m the domestic helper! I mop and sweep the floors. You can consider it exercise,” she joked.
